The NETS CashCard has been serving
the payment needs of Singaporeans for more than
a decade. It’s little wonder that people
have come to rely on the convenience that the
CashCard offers to users. Consumers are confident
in the card and they have every reason to be.
Birth of the NETS CashCard
In the early 1990s, Singapore launched a major
effort to introduce cashless payments. Several
government organisations, global card suppliers,
NETS and its stakeholder banks initiated this
effort. These organisations were instrumental
in setting the standard for the NETS CashCard.
With the move by the Land Transport Authority
(the then Registry of Vehicles) to launch Electronic
Road Pricing, the NETS CashCard quickly became
the stored value card of choice.
User Benefits
The NETS CashCard is ideal for ERP payments because
of its unique characteristics. It is risk-free,
being a prepaid card; secure and allows speedy
off-line transactions. The card also ensures data
privacy of individuals and is cost-effective.
Why the NETS CashCard remains the main stored
value card of choice here is because it has been
offering motorists efficient and reliable services
for more than a decade.
One characteristic of a stored value card is the
need to top it up. To meet this need, NETS, together
with shareholder banks, has built a comprehensive
network of top-up points, now covering more than
3,300 top-up points at various locations over
the years. It can also be topped up through the
Internet.
NETS has gradually extended the use of the NETS
CashCard from ERP payments to cover many applications
like payments at carparks, food and beverage outlets,
as well as retail points.
In Use Everywhere
Today, NETS CashCard generates in excess of 20
million transactions. About 60 percent of these
transactions are generated from the 800 carpark
systems and 35,000 non-motoring related applications.
The remaining 40 percent of NETS CashCard transactions
are generated from ERP payments.
Public Feedback and Media Interest
Some motorists have recently faced issues with
their ERP payments. Where ERP payments are concerned,
there are three components that constitute a successful
transaction: the in-vehicle unit (IU), the NETS
CashCard and the ERP gantry.
When motorists who have encountered problems with
ERP transactions bring their NETS CashCards to
the integrated testing centres, we have observed
that their cards were working well when tested
against reference IUs and on other NETS payment
devices there. This points to a compatibility
issue between some IUs and some NETS CashCards.
There are many other possible reasons that could
cause incompatibility issues. These may include
the engineering, the position, age and the wear-and-tear
of IUs. As such, we will continue to work with
LTA to resolve this matter.
NETS is committed to making the NETS CashCard
a convenient payment tool as it has been for the
past 12 years. We take pride in being a reliable
payment services provider and will continue to
strive for excellence to serve all our customers. |

“Earlier
this month, the LTA had pointed supposed
IU problems to a batch of defective
CashCards. But I have used the same
CashCard on various test cars and my
personal vehicle without any trouble
for the last two years. Ditto the other
staffers.”

“After
I realised the CashCards did not work
with ERP gantries, I used them for other
things like buying groceries at 7-Eleven.
They worked fine.”
